• Access to Mackaya Bella Lodge is on a Farm Rood, concrete strips and dirt, not suitable for cars with a low ground clearance. High rise vehicles and 4×4 vehicles are recommended. We are about 3k from the main road, the  R600
  • Vehicles with a low ground clearance do use the road daily but this would depend on your off road driving skills

From Durban (ONLY 2.5 HOURS!)

Travel along the N3 through Mooi River toll

Pass Estcourt turnoff

Pass Shell Ultra City and take the exit 194 (Bergville, Colenso, R74 glide off)

Turn left (Bergville Sign) and proceeds for 20km to Winterton. 1km through the town, turn left opposite the Engen Garage, onto the R66 Central Drakensberg road.

Proceed for +- 13km to the crossroads at Thokozisa. Continue straight for +-17km.  Pass The Nest, Champagne Sports Resort, Cederwood shopping centre on the right, Drakensberg Sun Resort turnoff on right, Dragons Peaks and the Drakensberg Boys Choir School on the right. Less the 300m after their gate you will see a small sign FARM ROOD on the right fixed to the fence. Turn into the driveway. The gate is set back from the road. This is an unpaved road.

Follow the concrete strip road down the hill and cross over a weir bridge. Continue on the gravel road. Mount Champagne’s tennis courts will be on the right hand side. Continue along the road and you will go over another weir bridge, follow the road up the hill. You will pass an old quarry on the right. Continue until you get to a red gate.

“Miss call” us from that gate and we will open it for you.

Go through the gate and you will pass a house on the right, follow the road until you see our sign “Mackaya Bella Lodge”. Turn left here; follow the grass driveway past the lemon trees. You will go through an old farm gate. Continue up the hill. The lodge is at the top of the hill.

Somebody will be there to meet you.

The road from our gate on the R600 to the lodge is approximately 3km. It is a farm road of dirt and cement strips. It is a scenic drive to the lodge. High rise or 4×4 vehicles are recommended.

From Gauteng (only 4.5 hours)

Travels through Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 through the Tugela Toll Plaza. Tack the first glide off after the Toll Plaza, which is at the bottom of Van Reenen’s pass

Turn left, for =- 4km on the N11 and then turn right towards Winterton. You will cross the N3 highway. At the T-junction (R74) turn left towards Winterton.

As you enter Winterton, opposite the Engen Garage, turn right onto the R600 Central Drakensberg road.

The alternate route is over Oliviershoek Pass (more scenic)

At Harrismith turn right onto N5 for 5km. Turn left onto R712 QwaQwa, Bergville Road. Left again on Bergville, Oliviershoek Pass through Bergville and onto Winterton. As you enter Winterton turn right opposite the Engen Garage on the R600 Central Drakensberg road.

Proceed as above.
